Why your credit score actually matters

What is it?

Your credit score is a number, usually between 300 and 850, that tells lenders how reliable you've been with paying back money in the past. It's based on things like whether you pay bills on time and how much debt you're carrying. Three companies calculate it: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A higher number means lenders see you as lower-risk.

Why does it affect me?

It shows up in more places than you'd think: getting approved for an apartment, the interest rate on a car loan or credit card (a low score can cost you thousands of extra dollars over time), whether you need a cosigner, and sometimes even security deposits for utilities. A better score generally means more approvals and better rates, that's the whole reason "building credit" is worth doing in the first place.
